Use

USA Flag UseThe USA flag is the emblem that represents an entire nation and its people. The flag is used as a sign of pride during ceremonies, parades, memorials, competitions, and all types of events where US representatives are present.

A common use of the flag was and still is on US postage stamps. The first stamp was the “Betsy Ross” flag which had 13 stars and was released in 1926. Since then the stamps have varied with different updated versions of the flag and value of the stamp.

The USA flag plays a significant role in military funerals where a flag is draped over the casket during the service, and then it is folded and given to the deceased’s family.

During particular times, the president or governors can proclaim nationwide, state or territory-wide mourning where the US flag is displayed at half-staff. This is a way to show respect and remembrance towards those who have passed. In order to fly the flag at half-staff, the flag must be raised to the top of the pole and then lowered to three-fourths of the pole. When lowering the flag, the same process is followed: first lift the flag to the top of the pole and then lower it slowly to the base of the flag pole. There are some dates that require the flag to be flown at half-staff. Some of those days include Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, Memorial Day, Patriots Day, and National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. There are four locations in the US where flags are always flown at half-staff, and those locations are the Post Cemetery at Mackinac Island in Michigan, Punchbowl in Honolulu, the Gettysburg National Cemetery, and Arlington National Cemetery.

The USA flag is also flown outside of public and private buildings just to emphasize the people’s patriotism and pride in their great nation on a daily basis. The US flag can be used for diverse occasions; the only restrictions are that it is displayed and used in a respectful manner.
