Arts and crafts are the key to a child’s heart. I’m sure you remember what it was like to be a kid and see a table full of art supplies. It was almost like a visit to the candy store. Being crafty and creative is in all young hearts. They love expressing their ideas through doing things. You can take this skill and desire to create things and put it to great use, especially around the holidays.
Independence Day is a great national holiday that takes place in the middle of the summer. It is celebrated by everyone and it is surrounded by flags, fireworks, and lots of food. If you spend this holiday with family and friends where many children are around, then you will be a favorite adult if you can bring them some arts and crafts supplies. Here are some ideas for projects in which you can use USA flags, the flag’s colors and symbols, and other patriotic things to entertain the kids during Independence Day:
• Make a USA Flag: Provide paper, colored pencils, tape or glue and tiny wooden poles. Instruct the children to recreate the USA flag.
• Design a Kid’s USA Flag: Give the children coloring utensils, paper, wooden poles and scissors, and ask them to create a USA flag that they think should represent the children in the US.
• Patriotic Banner: Using poster board or large sheets of constructive paper, ask the children to design banners to hang during Independence Day and make the USA flag and colors part of the banner.
• USA Silverware: Provide paper, scissors, tape or glue, coloring utensils and plastic silverware. Ask the children to design handle covers for their silverware that should be used during USA holidays.
It is very helpful to motivate the children with little prizes. Perhaps give the winners T-shirts, hats or Frisbees with the USA flag on them. You can have just as much fun with the crafts while setting up for the events and “testing” the projects.
